The Abenaki preferred name was Albanal, which means “men”. But, the name Abenaki means “people of the dawn” or “easterners.” The Abenaki people originated from Albany, New York, which is where they get the name Albanian from. Now, they live in Quebec, the Maritimes of Canada, and New England.
The Abenaki believe in a god named Tabaldak. Tabaldak is known as the creator god. Then, the gods named Gluskabe and Malsumis came to be from dust that was sitting on Tabaldak hand. A shaman was a religious ceremony leader. All shamans had at least one animal that they could transform into another animal. The Abenaki had a male dominant environment. But, the female shamans were especially feared, which made them gain respect.
The Abenaki tribe had many different ways to live but in the end of the day they choose to live in wigwams, teepees and long houses. The houses were made of wood and sticks.The abenaki tribe hunted, fished and grew crops for their food . The food that they hunted for included deer, moose, salmon, tilapia, corn and they made syrup from tree sap. The europeans treated the Abenaki like dirt to walk all over on the europeans settlers had come here and traded with the Abenakis for fur but in the end the took most of Abenaki land. This was unfair. The Abenaki treated the europeans with respect and kindness and they were kind enough to trade materials but at the end of the day they were fooled. They were fooled into thinking that this was a good idea but they ended up having most of their territory land taken away from them.
