The name Sioux stands for “two little serpents.” This tribe was found in North and South Dakota. They still exist today in these states. They’re considered the one the most people in America. Find exactly how many and whether or not they have to live on reservations But enough about present times, let's talk about past times.
The Sioux group tribe had several beliefs about God and their religion. For instance their beliefs were that about everything surrounding them had a spirit. In addition to that they believed that every spirit came from an big individual spirit. Known as the “Wakan Tanka”, which was the aspect of everything in the universe. It translates that “all is holy and religious”. Although it was the aspect of everything in the universe, it also had some assistance. This was called “Wakanpi”.
Food and Clothing
The kind of food that the Sioux tribe ate was mostly buffalo with other grown food such as rice, beans, and peppers. Men wore deerskin shirts and leggings. The women wore dresses made from soft deerskins and decorated it by using soft rabbit fur. In warm weather or when they were hunting buffalo, men wore only a strip of leather (breechcloth) and a pair of moccasins. In the winter, the Sioux wore a buffalo robe to keep warm.
Arts/Crafts and Famous Members
The Sioux tribe was known for their native quillwork. Each gender made different types of crafts. Such as beads. Women made beadings for necklace/bracelets. While amazing buffalo-hide paintings were made by the Men. Both genders also made crafts such as Pottery, Parfleche, and Calumets. There also some famous people in the Sioux tribe. Such a Chief Red Cloud who was a great leader of the tribe due to his bravery and honor. There was also Sitting Bull, prior to his name he was a great medicine man.
How did the Europeans/Americans treat them?How did they treat them?
The Europeans wanted the Sioux territory, so they can conquer all and make money off of the land and furs available there. Considering the fact that the Sioux tribe disapproved of this, they engaged in War. Unfortunately this led to hundreds of Native American’s deaths, in spite of Native American expertise on creating weapons such as Bows, Spears, War Clubs, and Buffalo-hide shields.
