The Zuni Tribe
What does Zuni even mean?Their tribal name is A'shiw which means “flesh people."
The Zuni tribe is known for being one of the Pueblo tribes on the Zuni River. Their tribe was located in New Mexico. Unlike some other tribes, they were never forced out of their homes when the Europeans came to the Americas. Many are actually still living in their area today. In 2000, 10,228 people were enrolled in the Zuni tribe. According to the 2000 Census, there were approximately 7,790 people in the Zuni reservation with 7,619 living in either the statistical areas of Zuni or Blackrock. Nearly half, or 43.0%, of the population lives in poverty on or off reservations. As of 2010, 538 Zuni live in Arizona.
The Zuni are a very peaceful people who hold the mountains, deserts and forests of their land sacred. Nature was something that was very close to them, as if nature was their family. Zuni culture was also closely tied to their agricultural history. This meant that hurting the environment was not apart of what they did. The Zuni have a clan system, or group of families who work together. Also, they are involved with a variety of ceremonies dedicated to their belief in the ancestors, or ancient ones. They had festivals known as the Shalako, where dancers adorned themselves to represent the “couriers of the rain” and bless new homes. They did this for luck and to get rain when it was too dry.
The Zuni people lived in adobe houses (after it was called pueblos when the Spanish people came.) Those houses were made of large stones that were cemented (attached with cement) together with adobe. Adobe is like a baked mixture of clay and straw. Each of the adobe homes had one family which is kind of like a modern apartment. They didn’t have stairs so they used ladders to reach the upstairs apartments. Zuni’s were also experts at farming so they grew crops like corn, beans, cotton, squash, and many more. Their corn was called maize at that time so they were able to eat that while they farmed it (so clearly they didn’t have to hunt for animals to get food that they need to eat).
There were European settlers approaching the southwest, where the Zunis were living, and the Europeans forced many of the Zunis into doing slave labor and violently put an end to their religion. Clearly, they were treating them bad, however, the Zunis learned new traditions and culture from the Europeans (Spanish) and began living in new ways. Before the Europeans started controlling them, the Zunis fought them and other tribes in wars for raiding their territory and trying to take over where they were living.
