The name “Omaha” comes from a meaning “Upstream." The Omaha tribe lived in the modern day state of Nebraska, which is why Omaha is now the state’s capital city. The houses of the Omaha look liked tents. The tents were made of wooden frames but around the spring and summer time they used buffalo skin as their shelter. Not everyone could’ve did everything like men were the only ones that had hunted and also the ones that went to war but the women would farm and take care of the rest of the family.
The Omaha had a rich culture. The language that they spoke was the Siouan language. Types of hairstyles they had were long braids same with flowing hair. Some people kind of crafts the Omaha created were beadings, quillings, same with hide paintings. Most of the Omaha’s believed that religion was very important. they first founded a Catholic Church in August of 1856 after their religion was converted by Christian missionaries from Europe. Before that, their religion involved gods and goddesses that they worshipped.
The food that they ate were fish, meat like deer, elk, and buffalo, black bear and wild turkey. They used bows and arrows , lances, stone ball clubs, hatchet axes, spears, and knives.
Many people that were apart of the Omaha group died because when the Europeans came they came with smallpox and the Native Americans wasn’t used to it so many got sick and died. Also, the Native Americans didn’t really get along with the Europeans so there was war and they especially didn’t get along since the europeans came with bad sickness and killed them.The Europeans would take the Native Americans things as well and they did not like that.
Famous members of the tribe were one Chief Big Elk, who was an Omaha chief. His real name was “Ontopanga”. He lead the tribe on the upper Missouri River.
