The Cheyennes were a Native American tribe. There name can mean “relatives of the Cree.” due to the language that they speak which is referred to as Šahiyenan. The Cheyennes believed in the Mahoe. It is known to be the Cheyenne’s Divine spirit or Great lord because according to them The Mahoe was the creator of the world. They worshiped him by a ritual that was performed annually for four days at the time of the summer solstice. Only the men in the tribe could participate. The women had to remain inside the tepee for the entire four days. The arrows are kept by the keepers of the Mahut, the arrows were a spiritual item the Cheyennes worshiped because it was the arrows Mahoe (their god) had used. The Cheyenne lived in modern day South Dakota , Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas until the 1800’s they lived in Oklahoma. This area is currently known as the Midwest.Today the Cheyenne occupy two reservations, one at Tongue River, Montana where some 6,500 people reside. The other reservation, in southwestern Oklahoma, is shared with their long time allies, the Arapaho, and consists of about 11,000 members.
The Cheyenne Indians lived in tepees made of buffalo hide also known as buffalo skin ,their tepees were more of a modern tent. The animals that they hunted for food were buffalo (because they were used many of the things they used) and deer they hunted these animals with spears and other weapons, they also planted squash, corn and beans . These different weapons helped them win battles and hunt. When the Europeans came they fought with Cheyennes and they started a war with the Cheyennes when they came. When the Cheyennes and the Europeans were done fighting with the they started a peace treaty but unfortunately the peace treaty did not last long.
They made quill embroidery it usually was Porcupine quills that were dyed and were weaved to leather or birchbark. They also did native beading, pipestone carvings which were the creating of pipes used to smoke tobacco, and pottery. Famous people from the Cheyenne tribe was The Chief of the southern Cheyenne who was Chief Black Kettle unsuccessfully attempted to resist white settlement in the Kansas and Colorado territories. Through his attempts to make peace in 1864 and end the massacre of about half his people at Sand Creek, which would prevent further damage and loss of life. The government ignored his guarantees, and Black Kettle tried again to reason with signing the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867. He was killed on Nov. 27, 1868, when Custer and his 7th Cavalry attacked Black Kettle's camp on the Washita River without warning and killed the chief and hundreds of Cheyenne elderly, women and children. The Cheyenne warriors used very powerful bows and very powerful arrows, war clubs, spears and hide shields this was helpful against the Sioux , Comanche and Kiowa tribes.
To us this means that you should not judge anybody if you do not know what they have been through their entire life or what had happened to they which had made them that way.
