This tribe is called the Delaware, otherwise known as the Lenape . The name Lenape stands for“True people’’. Guess what?! Their tribe still exists, even today but mostly in Delaware. The Lenape lived in villages, in round houses known as Wigwams. Each one of their villages looked like a rectangular house with a sweat lodge with log walls for protection. They also lived along the Delaware river in New Jersey.
The Lenape was a tribe that had believed that a god named Kitanitowit created the world we live on . The Lenape also believed that a tortoise was carrying the Earth on it’s back. If you smoke a cigarette or some tobacco then your tribe will be blessed. If you were sick then they would cut a birds wing and if it flew they would be heald.
As for food,, they ate soup , cornbread , dumplings , and even salad. In the 1600's the Europeans came to their land. At first the Lenape were treating them very fairly but then got a little curious as to what they were doing. Some of the Indians started to dress like the Europeans and most of the tribe started to get very angry as to why they were acting this way. The very wise and religious people in the tribe thought that they were taking their culture away so most of lenape left the land and never returned.
The Lenape was best known for their arts and crafts. They made American indian bead work , basketry , designed picture frames and clothes , jewlery also. They were famous for their artwork because they formed expressions through their work. Also their beautiful baskets were used to hold fruits and vegetables. Creating art and statues was a symbol of respect for their animals who they loved very well.

They were important because one which is Tamanend is the chief and he declared the peace of the Europeans and the Indians. Unami is important because she invented a new language that the lenape now speak. Also they named the language after her. Some other facts about this tribe is that they have people in their tribe that tells people's fortunes and tell you what not to do these people are called the Shamans they say that they have the power over all spirits.
