All About Shawnee's

The word Shawnee means the Southerner. The Shawnee tribe lived in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The villages were located as far North as New York and as far South as Georgia. The shawnee tribe still exists today in Oklahoma. Today 15,000 Shawnees live in America today.
The Shawnee people believed in great spirits.They thought all things in nature are sacred or holy. They held ceremonies to honor the dead. Shawnee’s think the green snakes brought good luck.
The Shawnee’s lived in teepees. Each village they made it had a larger council house build out of wood. Today Shawnee’s build wigwams. A wigwam is a dome-shaped hut or tent made by fastening mats, skins, or bark over a framework of poles, used by some North American Indian peoples. Shawnee were people that farmed. the women planted and harvested corn and squash. The men hunted for deer, Turkey, and started fishing. The food they ate was soup, cornbread and different type of stews, a special type of pancakes the shawnees made. The Europeans/Africans settlers treated the other people with all disrespect.
The Shawnee were best known for beadwork, pottery, and wood carving. They crafted wampum out of white and purple shell beads.
Some of the important people in Shawnee are Tecumseh and Chief BlueJacket. The most important thing in Shawnee is there story telling. The Shawnee spoke Central Algonquian to their family and other people. The Shawnee's children play with each other like we do now and days. They go to school and help around the house.
