The Navajo Tribe
The Navajo started in the 1500’s. The Navajo tribe was one of the largest tribes in the U.S, and still remains large with 300,048 people enrolled as tribal members. The Navajo tribe name means farm, fields, and valleys. They lived in the Southwest states.These states include Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, And Colorado. The Navajo tribe spoke the Apache languages and English. Some people in the tribe do not know English language. For many Navajo, English has been a second language. Only 30 percent of Native Americans speak their own tribal language.
The Navajo people lived in houses called hogans. Hogans which are traditional earth houses. Theses houses were made of a special wood framework packed with clay into a domed shape.
Navajo used to plant corn, beans and squash. They didn’t only plant but they used to hunt animals such as deer, and antelope. They also ate fruits, nuts, and herbs.People came from the south to bring food such as corn, beans, etc (Things that they planted too). The Europeans weren’t nice to the navajo tribe. They thought they were enemies. The Navajo treated the Europeans badly by stealing the indians land food. They were very disrespectful to the natives.
The special kind of arts that they made colorful woven rugs silver,turquoise, and jewelry pottery baskets and sand paintings.Turquoise is closely associated with Navajo jewelry, but it was not until 1880 that the first turquoise was known to be set in silver. And then that’s when the coral and other semi-precious stones came into common use around 1900.
Their beliefs about God/nature/religion is that they believe that in the Universe there exists an Almighty, a spiritual force that is the source of all life. Also there religion Navajo mythology is enormously rich and poetically expressive. According to basic cosmological belief, all of existence is divided between the Holy People (supernaturals) and the Earth Surface People.
Some famous Navajo people have made major impacts on history. Navajo were used as code talkers during WWII, which helped America to defeat the JapanHoskanni also known as Hush-Keaney (meaning angry one), governed the remote lands in the Monument Valley/Navajo Mountain region in the current state of Utah.Hoskininni and his band of Navajo resisted the efforts of the United States military to round up all Navajo and force them to march hundreds of miles east, to Bosque Redondo/Fort Sumner, New Mexico (known as "The Long Walk").
